How it works

The pudding is a mesh of small tetrahedra. Every step, each edge tries to return to its resting length and each tetrahedron tries to keep its volume, so a squashed pudding bulges out sideways instead of shrinking. Softer settings let the edges stretch further.

Each piece is described by its outline seen from above. A knife stroke becomes a vertical plane; it's carried back into the piece's resting shape, the outline is split along it, and both halves are rebuilt as new meshes that start exactly where the old custard was and keep its motion.

The surface is rendered with light passing partway through, so the caramel and the blade look slightly blurred where they sit behind custard.

Illustrative scale: the pudding is about 7 cm tall at 1.08 g/cm³.
